I fire in the gas kilns at Kigbeare Studios, each firing taking about a full day from the first lighting. Gas firing is also done in reduction, allowing the glazes to develop rich depth and character.

Compared to wood or soda, gas firing offers a little more control over the atmosphere, while still leaving space for beautiful variation. The results are glossy, expressive surfaces with warm tones and subtle shifts in colour. I use gas firing mainly for functional ware — bowls, plates, mugs, and casserole dishes — pieces made to be used and enjoyed every day, where the finish complements both form and purpose.
